Why does no Pan-American Union akin to the European Union exist? Such American integration has been discussed even longer than European integration. What are the defining moments in the history of intra-American integration? In the past two decades, several attempts have been made to further American unity (North American Free Trade Agreement, Mercosur or Common Southern Market, Union of South American Nations, Organization of American States), yet they all involve different visions of what constitutes "America" and what role each regional power would play in the arrangement. What are the real questions behind the proposed arrangements?

Using the Pan-American Conference of 1890 as a starting point, this seminar seeks to uncover the economic and diplomatic battle between the United States and Argentina throughout the 20th century. Between the United States' Monroe Doctrine and Argentina's "special relationship" with the British Empire, these two poles of America represent very different visions of continental integration, the threads of which will continue to shape the region in the years to come.
