Experience

Malcolm H. Wiener  was born in Tsingtao, China, July 3, 1935.  He is married to Carolyn Talbot Seely Wiener.  They are the parents of Kate, Elizabeth, Thomas and Jonathan.  Mr. Wiener served as an Ensign/Lt. (jg) in the U.S. Navy, 1957-60.  His experience includes attorney, 1963-1970; private investment management, 1971-97 (Chairman, The Millburn Corporation, Millburn Ridgefield Corporation, CommInVest, 1977-97, ShareInVest, 1982-97). Mr. Wiener is a graduate of Harvard College (Phi Beta Kappa) and the Harvard Law School.  He is the author of numerous works on Aegean prehistory, on interconnections between the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations and those of Egypt and the Near East, and on the chronology of the ancient Mediterranean and Egyptian world.  He has also published works on a wide variety of subjects including international and domestic economic policy, various aspects of foreign policy including the transformation of the former Soviet Union, and Picasso and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Mr. Wiener has received the honorary doctorates of three leading centers of prehistoric research, the Universities of Sheffield, Tübingen and Athens.  He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; a Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities and of the Austrian Academy; and a Chevalier in the Ordre National des Arts et des Lettres of France.  He has received the Ring of Honour of the German Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur, Mainz, and is the honorand of a festschrift entitled Meletemata: Studies in Aegean Archaeology Presented to Malcolm H. Wiener as He Enters His 65th Year.  Mr. Wiener serves as President of the Board of Trustees, Institute for Aegean Prehistory; Trustee of and Member, Executive Committee, The American School of Classical Studies in Athens; is an Honorary Fellow for Life of the Archaeological Institute of America.  Mr. Wiener is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, chaired its Foreign Relations Independent Task Force on “Non-lethal Weapons: Military Implications and Options” and wrote its report.  He is a member of the Advisory Board of The Malcolm Wiener Center for Social Policy, The John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, and a Trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
