President Bill Clinton Shares Insights on Foreign Policy and Diplomacy

On April 7, the Future of Diplomacy Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center was honored to welcome President Bill Clinton to Harvard as the featured speaker at the inaugural Stephen W. Bosworth Memorial Lecture in Diplomacy. The virtual event featured opening remarks by Harvard President Larry Bacow and a video tribute to the late Ambassador Bosworth, who was an active and beloved member of the Belfer Center community for a number of years. A closing video featured comments by Ambassador Bosworth’s widow, Christine Bosworth, and their grandson.

Strengthening the U.S.-Brazil Relationship: Nestor Forster Jr., Ambassador of Brazil to the U.S.

On March 29, the Future of Diplomacy Project hosted Nestor Forster Jr., Ambassador of Brazil to the U.S., who spoke about the bilateral relationship between the two largest economies and democracies in the Western Hemisphere: Brazil and the United States. He discussed the political and economic ties between the two countries in various areas, such as defense cooperation, trade policy, sustainable economic growth, environment, and science and technology. Faculty Chair, Nicholas Burns, introduced the event. Senior Fellow and former U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, Thomas Shannon Jr., and Project Coordinator, Erika Manouselis co-moderated this discussion.

On November 17, Ambassadors Nicholas Burns, Marc Grossman, and Marcie Ries officially launched their report, “A U.S. Diplomatic Service for the 21st Century,”published as part of the American Diplomacy Project at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School.  These distinguished career Foreign Service Officers, and report co-authors, shared their recommendations on how to rebuild, reform, and reimagine the U.S. Foreign Service so that America can have the strongest and most effective diplomatic service to defend our country and advance its interests.

WorldBoston’s annual State of the State Department is a high-level event serving as an annual occasion to assess the strength of a critical instrument in the pursuit of U.S. national interest, within a policy context. In addition to critically evaluating the current state of the State Department, we look at U.S. diplomacy through the lens of the transatlantic relationship. Ambassador Nicholas Burns is joined by E.U. Ambassador to the U.S. Stavros Lambrinidis to discuss the dynamic between the State Department and transatlantic diplomacy.
