The Belfer Center began researching energy technology issues in the late 1990s. Its mission was “to determine and promote the adoption of effective strategies for developing and deploying cleaner and more efficient energy technologies that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and stress on water resources, and improve economic development.”

In this issue, we look at the history and influence of the Center’s energy innovation efforts in the past two decades by focusing primarily on ETIP’s work in the U.S. and China.

CAMBRIDGE, MA -- Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia, has been named a Senior Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center, where he will lead a major research effort on possibilities and impacts of a new strategic relationship between China and the United States. In addition, he will be a Visiting Fellow with Harvard's Institute of Politics, beginning in February 2014.

The Winter 2013-14 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features recent and upcoming activities, research, and analysis by members of the Center community on critical global issues. Cambridge, MA – Dr. Khalid Alsweilem, former Chief Counselor and Director General of Investment at the Saudi Arabian Monetary Agency (SAMA), has been appointed a non-resident fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. At the Belfer Center, Dr. Alsweilem will focus on the study of sovereign wealth funds, with a particular focus on Saudi Arabia’s reserve sovereign funds and their linkages to the real economy. 

The International Center for Climate Governance (ICCG) has named Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs winner of the 2012 ICCG Climate Think Tank Ranking in the Global category. The Belfer Center was cited as the most influential institution outside of Europe “working in the field of climate change economics and policy.” The European winner is the Basque Center for Climate Change (BC3) in Spain. Several times each week, the Belfer Center library is filled with students, faculty, and fellows eager to listen, challenge, and exchange information and ideas triggered by the day’s presentation. Many of these talks are by one of the Center’s more than 70 research and senior fellows. This article features a few of the talented women and men who are current and former faculty, fellows, staff and associates of the Belfer Center whose work is making significant contributions in public and private sectors around the world.

Dozens of members of the Belfer Center community are currently serving or have until recently served in positions within the United States government. The group's experience and expertise span many of the international challenges confronting the nation today.
