Cambridge, MA – Harvard Kennedy School has named two former senior U.S. Foreign Service Officers – Ambassador Victoria Nuland, former Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasian Affairs, and Ambassador Thomas Shannon, former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs – as non-resident Senior Fellows with the Future of Diplomacy Project at the School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

New Report Focuses on NATO at Seventy: An Alliance in Crisis

As the 70th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) approaches, the world’s oldest and most successful military alliance of democratic nations faces serious and complex challenges to its purpose, effectiveness, and unity in 2019. In a new report to be launched at the Munich Security Conference February 15, 2019, former U.S. Permanent Representatives to NATO Douglas Lute and Nicholas Burns highlight ten major challenges to NATO in a new report, NATO at Seventy: An Alliance in Crisis, and offer recommendations to bolster this critically important alliance.

Ambassador Samantha Power to Receive 2019 Moynihan Prize in Social Science and Public Policy

Former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power, Belfer Center-based Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, will receive the prestigious 2019 Moynihan Prize in Social Science and Public Policy, the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) announced today. The award will be presented at an award ceremony in Washington, D.C. in October. 

The 2018 Moynihan Prize recipient was John P. Holdren, Co-Director of the Belfer Center's Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program and former Science Advisor to President Barack Obama.

Future of Diplomacy Project Welcomes Nine Spring Fellows

The Future of Diplomacy Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will welcome nine Senior Fellows to the Harvard Kennedy School campus between February and April 2018. All fellows will be actively engaged in Project programming, including chairing seminars with students, conducting research, and playing an active role in the intellectual life of the Harvard Kennedy School.

Ambassadors Jeffrey DeLaurentis, Jose Antonio Sabadell Named Fellows with Harvard’s Future of Diplomacy Project

Ambassador Jeffrey DeLaurentis, former Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba, and José Antonio Sabadell, former Ambassador of the European Union to Mauritania, have been named Fellows with the Future of Diplomacy Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. DeLaurentis has been named Senior Diplomatic Fellow and Sabadell will be the first Rafael del Piño-MAEC (Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation) Fellow at the Future of Diplomacy Project. His fellowship is supported by a grant by the Rafael del Piño Foundation based in Madrid, Spain.

Ambassador Douglas E. Lute Named Senior Fellow by Belfer Center's Future of Diplomacy Project

The Future of Diplomacy Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs has named Ambassador Douglas E. Lute a Senior Fellow. While at the Kennedy School, Ambassador Lute will initiate a research project focused on NATO and transatlantic relations that will address the multiplicity of challenges facing the alliance as it approaches its 70th anniversary. He will also share his expertise in security and diplomacy by conducting seminars and study groups with students and fellows.

Harvard Kennedy School’s Future of Diplomacy Project is proud to name Jake Sullivan a Senior Fellow.
