Podcast: "Seeds of Discord: Constitutional Woes from Iraq to the Arab Spring" with Zaid Al Ali

May 6, 2015

An audio recording from Zaid Al-Ali, Senior Adviser on Constitution Building, International IDEA.

On April 22, 2015 at MEI, Constitutional expert Zaid Al-Ali spoke on Iraq's fraught constitutional process in the wake of American military intervention, drawing parallels to regional actors Egypt and Tunisia's own delicate transitions, to answer the question: what can the countries of the Arab Spring learn from the Constitutional missteps of Iraq? He examined the historic moment of constitutional reform on the global stage following the Arab Spring to understand why the Arab world has so far reaped only modest benefits. He also discussed the importance of implementing a robust and legitimate drafting process that focuses on building institutions and includes all national political actors, instead of narrow interest groups.
