Public Eyes in Space: Monitor Nuclear Proliferation
The proliferation of nuclear weapons poses a great threat to international peace and security. After Iraq's clandestine nuclear weapons program was discovered, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) adopted new safeguard protocols in 1997 to improve its ability to detect undeclared fissile material production. Those protocols opened the door for IAEA to use various types of information, including commercial satellite imagery.
