Matthew Meselson Receives Future of Life Award for Work to Ban Bioweapons

Matthew Meselson, a driving force behind the 1972 Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), has received the $50,000 Future of Life Award for his successful efforts to ban biological weapons – one of the most inhumane forms of warfare known to humanity. The award was presented on April 9 during the Keynote Ceremony of the Conference of World Affairs at the University of Colorado, Boulder. April 9 marked the eve of the 47th anniversary of the signing of the BWC.

New Report Focuses on NATO at Seventy: An Alliance in Crisis

As the 70th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) approaches, the world’s oldest and most successful military alliance of democratic nations faces serious and complex challenges to its purpose, effectiveness, and unity in 2019. In a new report to be launched at the Munich Security Conference February 15, 2019, former U.S. Permanent Representatives to NATO Douglas Lute and Nicholas Burns highlight ten major challenges to NATO in a new report, NATO at Seventy: An Alliance in Crisis, and offer recommendations to bolster this critically important alliance.

Belfer Center Ranked World’s No. 1 University Think Tank

For the sixth year in a row, Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs has been ranked the best university-affiliated research center in the world. The rankings appear in the 2018 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report, produced annually by James McGann, director of the Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program at the University of Pennsylvania’s Lauder Institute. The Index seeks to “increase the profile and performance of think tanks and raise the public awareness of the important role think tanks play in governments and civil societies around the globe.”

Ambassador Samantha Power to Receive 2019 Moynihan Prize in Social Science and Public Policy

Former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power, Belfer Center-based Anna Lindh Professor of the Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School, will receive the prestigious 2019 Moynihan Prize in Social Science and Public Policy, the American Academy of Political and Social Science (AAPSS) announced today. The award will be presented at an award ceremony in Washington, D.C. in October. 

The 2018 Moynihan Prize recipient was John P. Holdren, Co-Director of the Belfer Center's Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program and former Science Advisor to President Barack Obama.

Robinson retired this year as Commander, United States Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command.

Michael B. Greenwald Named Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center

Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs has named Michael Blake Greenwald a Fellow. While at the Kennedy School, Greenwald, who has served the U.S. government in several senior diplomatic roles, will lecture, conduct research, and engage with students on a range of issues including economic sanctions, illicit finance, national security, intelligence, and global finance.
