Afghanistan: Open Dialogue

Harvard Faculty, Fellows, Staff, and Students

Focus on the ‘build' in NATO's ‘clear, hold, build' strategy Thursday, December 3, 3-4 p.m.  Belfer Library, L369.

President Obama is expected to lay out the new American strategy for finishing the fight in Afghanistan this Tuesday night.  The anticipated increase in military personnel will, among other things, have important effects on NATO's ability to provide relief and development to the Afghani people.

As part of the seminar series Afghanistan: Open Dialogue, come hear Sabrina Roshan and Adam Cooper, both MPP2s, discuss their forthcoming work on this critical intersection between tactical military success and strategic nation-wide reconstruction. Determining the impact of development assistance on security requires much more than correlating aid inputs with security outputs; there are multiple factors that drive security, from troop levels to effectiveness of local government to geography to local traditions.  Sabrina and Adam will provide their insights on this complex issue before the seminar proceeds into a broader question and answer discussion.
