The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a Director's Seminar moderated by Graham Allison, Director of the Belfer Center, Harvard Kennedy School; Douglas Dillon Professor of Government with Gary Samore, Executive Director for Research, Belfer Center, and David Sanger, National Security Correspondent, New York Times and Belfer Senior Fellow, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
Graham Allison is Director of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs and Douglas Dillon Professor of Government at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. The “Founding Dean” of the modern Kennedy School, Dr Allison has served as Special Advisor to the Secretary of Defense under President Reagan and as Assistant Secretary of Defense under President Clinton. Dr. Allison's first book, Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis (1971) ranks among the all-time bestsellers with more than 450,000 copies in print. His latest book (2013), Lee Kuan Yew: The Grand Master’s Insights on China, the United States and the World (co-authored with Robert Blackwill), has been a bestseller in the US and abroad. His previous book, Nuclear Terrorism: The Ultimate Preventable Catastrophe, now in its third printing, was selected by the New York Times as one of the "100 most notable books of 2004."
Gary Samore is the Executive Director for Research at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is also a Non-resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution and President of United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI). Prior to joining the Harvard Kennedy School, he served for four years as President Obama’s White House Coordinator for Arms Control and the Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Terrorism. In that capacity, he was the U.S. Sherpa to the Nuclear Security Summits in Washington (2010) and Seoul (2012). He also served for four years as President Clinton’s Senior Director for Non-proliferation and Export controls and held various positions in the Department of State focusing on non-proliferation issues in South Asia, the Middle East and East Asia. He has been Vice President for Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in New York, Vice President for Global Security and Sustainability at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, and Director of Studies and Senior Fellow for Non-proliferation at the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) in London. While at IISS, he produced three “strategic dossiers” on the strategic weapons programs of Iraq, North Korea, and Iran. Dr. Samore was a National Science Foundation Fellow at Harvard University, where he received his M.A. and Ph.D. in government in 1984.
David E. Sanger, Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy and the Belfer Center's first Senior Fellow for National Security and the Press, is National Security Correspondent of The New York Times. In a 32-year career at the paper, he has been a member of two teams that won the Pulitzer Prize, and has received many of journalism's top awards for national security, foreign policy and White House reporting. He specializes in coverage of nuclear proliferation and international economics. He is also the author of two best-sellers on foreign policy: The Inheritance: The World Obama Confronts and the Challenges to American Power (2009) and Confront and Conceal: Obama's Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power. He is a 1982 graduate of Harvard College and, with Graham Allison, teaches a case-study course at the Kennedy School, "Central Challenges of American National Security, Strategy and the Press.''
