Capital Investment: The Evolving Role of the High-Tech Industry in Washington
This presentation is an interim report on a long-term research project that aims to describe and explain the political development of thehigh-technology industry in the United States since the U.S. government's antitrust suit against IBM in 1969. Prof. Hart will provide datathat track political activity over time, including the industry's lobbying presence, associations, involvement in campaigns, and appearancesbefore Congressional committees. His interpretation focuses on the factors that have pulled the industry to Washington and how thesefactors have changed over time. Although the high-tech industry has a somewhat deserved reputation for being apolitical, this analysissuggests that the latest generation of high-tech companies are likely to become politically active earlier in their development as businessesthan their counterparts in previous cohorts.
