A brutal war in central Africa, which began with the genocide in Rwanda and spread to Burundi and the Congo, has raged for nine years, claiming more than 4 million lives. Recently, aggressive peacekeeping in northeastern Congo by a French-led multinational force and the United Nations, and the willingness of some of the warring factions in the Congo to put down their arms and come together in a transitional government, have raised hopes for peace.
