Despite being a small country with a total population roughly that of the Greater Boston area, Denmark has consistently pursued an active foreign policy aimed at making a difference in the world. The strong Danish international commitment is underpinned by a balanced foreign policy approach encompassing both “hard” and “soft” instruments to address the global challenges facing us today. Denmark is a close ally of the United States and has been a strong supporter of close transatlantic cooperation.

Two critical areas affecting the security of both the United States and Europe are Iraq and Afghanistan. Denmark has contributed to the missions in both countries for several years in close cooperation with the United States and other partners. The Danish government is firmly committed to the global effort to combat terrorism. Denmark’s development assistance and humanitarian aid rank among the highest in the world, measured on a per capita basis. As an example of  Danish balanced and proactive foreign policy, Denmark is using its expertise in the development area to ensure broad-based and sustainable approaches to stabilization and reconstruction in conflict areas. Denmark is also an active proponent of a strong commitment to addressing today’s and tomorrow’s environmental problems. As a testament to the Danish international role in this area, Denmark will host 2009 UN Global Climate Summit.

There are strong economic ties between Denmark and the United States, and the United States is the no. 1 investor in Denmark. The country’s business climate is projected to remain the best in the world for the next five years, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit—who concluded that Denmark maintains a fruitful balance between state and independent market economy. Danes enjoy one of the highest living standards in the world and often are ranked at the top on surveys of lifestyle, health, and education. In addition, Denmark is considered a forerunner on sustainable energy solutions. Danish know-how and experiences in these fields are becoming an increasingly strong component of the close cooperation between Denmark and the United States—and constitute yet further evidence that even a small country can make a difference in the world.
