Nahman Tal spent 40 years in Israeli intelligence with the Israeli General Security Service, serving for many years as the Head of its Arabic Section. He was a participant in the Madrid Conference and a member of the Israeli delegation in peace talks with the Palestinians and the the Jordanians. Following his retirement from government service, he joined the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at the University of Tel Aviv as a visiting Research Fellow, where he has been working on government responses to Islamic fundamentalism in Egypt and Jordan, and on the Hamas threat to Israel.
