How ethnic identities change: the structural dynamics of narrative silences

About

Memories about the violence of war and the social divisions they contribute to are one of the most difficult challenges to peace implementation. Examining narrative data from Italy and the former Yugoslavia about World War II, this talk will trace how a nascent democracy and an authoritarian regime confronted this challenge by exploring the various kinds of stories that get silenced in these two different regime settings. This work challenges the idea that authoritarian regimes change and silence narrator's identity narratives more than democratic regimes.
