Preparing for Disaster: Are We Ready for the Next 'Big One'

About

The U.S. hurricane season officially kicks off June 1st and insurers are bracing themselves. After a $60- billion industry loss from Katrina, Rita, Wilma last fall, can insurers really cope with the next “Big One” – whether a West Coast earthquake or another deadly Gulf of Mexico hurricane? Winifred A. Baker, president of Lloyd's America, a subsidiary of Lloyd's, the London insurance market, will tackle the burning issue. Founded in 1688, the Lloyd’s market has been underwriting large and unusual risks in the United States for over a century, helping rebuild San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, Manhattan after 9/11 and New Orleans after Katrina. Ms. Baker, ranked among the leading 100 women in insurance, joined Lloyd’s in 1998 after almost two decades in the industry. Since then, Lloyd’s has seen its U.S. market share more than double to over $9 billion in annual premiums, accounting for more than 40% of its worldwide business.
