Science, Technology and Sustainability in the United Nations System: Prospects for the World Summit on Sustainable Development

The presentation examines the place of science and technology in sustainability formulations in United Nations activities. It argues that implementation of sustainability programs such as Agenda 21, the targets of the Millennium Declaration and the outcomes of the World Summit of Sustainable Development will depend on the degree to which scientific and technological issues are addressed. The presentation focuses on the challenges and opportunities facing the preparations for the WSSD.
