As the U.S. Defense Attache to China, General Eikenberry leads the large American military delegation at the U.S. embassy in Beijing. He has been extensively involved in U.S.-China security relations for more than a decade. Prior to his posting to Beijing, he served as chief China advisor to Defense Secretary William Perry as director of the Defense Department's Office of Chinese and Mongolian Affairs. General Eikenberry has also commanded a battalion of the 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y., and has served in airborne, mechanized, ranger, and light infantry units in the U.S., Europe, and South Korea. In addition to his military duties, he has written on ancient Chinese strategy, as well as contemporary Chinese defense and foreign policy. General Eikenberry is a graduate of West Point, Stanford, and Harvard, and was a 1993 National Security Fellow at the Kennedy School.
