MEI Research Fellow Sharan Grewal will discuss his new book "Soldiers of Democracy: Military Legacies and the Arab Spring."

Dr. Youssef Chahed, former Prime Minister of Tunisia (2016-2020) and MEI Senior Fellow, will offer a unique insider view of Tunisia’s struggle for democracy and economic growth since 2011. Participants will hear about concrete challenges leaders faced while seeking to advance democracy and economic growth in the Arab context. Together, participants will analyze what institutional and political drivers promoted and constrained Tunisia’s democratic development – what helped Tunisian democracy survive despite the absence of pre-conditions and what lessons might be learned for the future.

Professor Steve Monroe will discuss his upcoming book Varieties of Protectionism: Neoliberal reform in the Arab world, which explores why neoliberal trade policies have not deepened international trade in many Arab markets, with MEI Research Fellow Sharan Grewal.

Join us for a panel discussion featuring Amaney Jamal, Princeton University, David Makovsky, The Washington Institute, Khalil Shikaki, Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, and Shai Feldman, Brandeis University, moderated by MEI Faculty Chair Tarek Masoud, about the recent tragedies facing the Israeli and Palestinian peoples, the historical and current factors that led to this conflict, and the broader geopolitical implications.

MEI Fellow Aaron Rock-Singer will give a talk on his new book "In the Shade of the Sunnah" moderated by MEI Faculty Affiliate Andrew March.
