Nicholas Burns and James L. Jones, Jr., former National Security Advisor and retired Marine Corps General, co-authored a major report released this week by the Atlantic Council: “Restoring the Power and Purpose of the NATO Alliance.” They argue in this report that the next American president must provide strong U.S. leadership to cope with the most serious threat to peace and security in Europe since the end of the Cold War.

This issue brief warns that without urgent policy changes U.S. and international efforts may fail in Afghanistan. The brief addresses the current situation in Afghanistan and offers several policy recommendations to ensure future success there.

The Center for the Study of the Presidency issued this report on status of current U.S. and international efforts in Afghanistan and the need for an improved strategy to ensure a secure and prosperous Afghanistan for the future.

The Independent Commission submitted this report to the House and Senate Committees on Armed Services, Appropriations, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations/Affairs on the readiness of the Iraqi Security Forces in September 2007.
