Ambassador Nigel Sheinwald: UK Foreign and Security Policy in an Age of Austerity

Nigel Sheinwald is the UK Ambassador to the United States. He joined the British Diplomatic Service in 1976 and has served in Washington (twice), Brussels (twice) and Moscow and in a wide range of policy jobs in London.  He took up his position as British Ambassador to the United States in October 2007. In that role he leads the Embassy in Washington and nine Consulates-General around the United States. He had an earlier posting to Washington in 1983-87 as First Secretary (Political) in the Embassy.  Before becoming Ambassador in Washington, Nigel served as Foreign Policy and Defence Adviser to the Prime Minister from 2003-2007.

20 years after Germany's reunification Germany's ambassador to the U.S., Klaus Scharioth, Professor  Nicholas Burns and Elisabeth von Thadden, editor at the German weekly DIE ZEIT, will discuss the impact of this historic event. The panel discussion is hosted by the McCloy Scholarship Program and The Future of Diplomacy Project and co-sponsored by the German-Austrian-Swiss Caucus and KSSG.

Nicholas D. Kristof, a columnist for The Times since 2001, is a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner who writes op-ed columns that appear twice a week.  He will be discussing his book, "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity For Women Worldwide," which he co-wrote with his wife in 2009.  Nicholas Burns, Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Politics, will moderate the discussion.
