This year’s Great Negotiator Award will be presented to Martti Ahtisaari, former president of Finland and recipient of the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize, for his work on diplomacy and negotiation throughout his career. Ahtisaari will receive the award during a visit to Harvard on September 27.

Jim Steinberg was appointed Deputy Secretary of State by President Obama in early 2009. Prior to joining the administration, Deputy Secretary Steinberg served as Dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas from 2006 until 2009.  He has also served as deputy national security advisor to President Bill Clinton and as vice president and director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C.

The Political Economy of India: The Current State of Affairs and Future Possibilities

Dr. Amit Mitra is the Secretary General of the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), which represents over 250,000 enterprises and 400 Chambers and Associations spread across India and interacts with over 79 countries worldwide. Dr. Mitra will speak on the political economy of India and will respond to questions from faculty, students and staff.   He will be introduced by Professor Nicholas Burns who will moderate the program.
 
A 2008 recipient of the prestigious "Padma Shree," an award given by the President of India in recognition of his contribution to Indian trade and industry, Dr. Mitra has worked closely with the Indian government and private companies throughout the country.   
 
He currently serves as the chairman of the Expert Committee to the Railway Ministry, and as a member on the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council the Planning Commission's Expert Group on Equitable Development.  He also sits on the advisory boards of many prominent Indian companies, including the India Fund of the Unit Trust of India (UTI) and Microsoft Corporation (India) Pvt. Ltd.
