Pan-American: The United States, Argentina, and Rival Visions of American Union

Thu., Feb. 16, 2012 | 12:15pm - 1:45pm

Littauer Building - Belfer Center Library, Room 369

Why does no Pan-American Union akin to the European Union exist? Such American integration has been discussed even longer than European integration. What are the defining moments in the history of intra-American integration? Using the Pan-American Conference of 1890 as a starting point, this seminar seeks to uncover the economic and diplomatic battle between the United States and Argentina throughout the 20th century. Between the United States' Monroe Doctrine and Argentina's "special relationship" with the British Empire, these two poles of America represent very different visions of continental integration.

Please join us! Coffee and tea provided. Everyone is welcome, but admittance will be on a first come–first served basis.
