House Democracy Partnership Commission Hearing

| Dec. 01, 2021

The House Democracy Partnership Commission held a hearing on the role of independent and constituent-driven legislatures and the importance of legislative strengthening efforts. Parliaments have a key role to play in promoting and advancing good governance, the sharing of best practices, and collaborating with their peers. Bodies such as the House Democracy Partnership can be formidable tools for parliaments to engage with one other and become valuable fora for strengthening democratic institutions and deepening bilateral relations.

Two key witnesses, Secretary Madeleine Albright and Ambassador Paula Dobriansky, examined the importance of legislative strengthening efforts and what parliaments can and should be doing in order to ensure a whole-of government approach is taken to promote transparent, independent, and accountable legislative institutions.

This hearing occurred in the lead up to the Summit for Democracy taking place in early December 2021. The Summit included several tracks of focus, including a legislative track organized by the House Democracy Partnership that highlighted members of parliament from around the world and the role legislatures have in consolidating, strengthening, and promoting democratic governance.

The hearing was virtual. Pursuant to H. Res. 965, Members of Congress and witnesses participated remotely via Cisco WebEx. Members of the public and the media may view the hearing on our YouTube page or here on the Commission website. For any questions, please contact Derek Luyten.
