Climate and Security: Critical Connections

Spring 2021

To mark Earth Day 2021, a number of Belfer Center climate, security, and intelligence experts took part in two conferences that identified and discussed the impacts of climate change not only on the environment and well-being of the world’s people, but also on international security and political stability throughout the world.

Valerie Plame, a former covert operations officer and current candidate for U.S. Congress, recalls the impact of her cover being blown in political retaliation. Former Republican Congressman Mike Rogers took part in the discussion.

Ethical and Moral Issues in the Intelligence Community

Summer 2019

In May, a number of former intelligence officers, policymakers, cyber experts, and top journalists took part in a Belfer Center Intelligence Project conference titled “The Ethics & Morality of Intelligence.” Speakers at “The Ethics & Morality of Intelligence” conference identified and discussed key moral and ethical questions around the nature of current intelligence practices and future trends.

Origins of the Recanati-Kaplan Program for Intelligence Officers

If the first job of government is to protect the homeland, then the work of intelligence officers can be likened to the world’s most sophisticated alarm system. Such a system depends on game-changing technology, such as cyber sleuthing. But true effectiveness requires men and women who can turn data into intelligence by applying advanced skills in analysis, language, policy savvy, security studies, and—increasingly—history.

Francisco Aguilar’s Explorer Saves Lives

When former Belfer Center International and Global Affairs Student Fellow Francisco Aguilar learned about the challenges facing responders during Haiti’s devastating earthquake in 2010, he got an idea that could potentially save lives in the future. His idea, which took him to the White House this summer, was to develop a small and inexpensive tactical camera device that “spots danger,” as the White House put it, “before soldiers and first responders walk into it.

Tackling Issues from Intelligence and Wars to Cyber Governance and Campaign Funding

“The CIA, more than any other agency, [has been] instrumental in stopping terrorism and bringing terrorists to justice,” Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan said during a JFK Jr. Forum at Harvard Kennedy School in April.  “Will we make mistakes in the future? Probably. But the Agency is a wonderful organization and…I am frustrated with its image because it doesn’t comport with reality.”
