Trends in Investments in Global Energy Research, Development, and Demonstration

| May/June 2011

Recent national trends in investments in global energy research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) are inconsistent around the world. Public RD&D investments in energy are the metric most commonly used in international comparative assessments of energy-technology innovation, and the metric employed in this article. Overall, the data indicate that International Energy Agency (IEA) member country government investments have been volatile: they peaked in the late 1970s, declined during the subsequent two decades, bottomed out in 1997, and then began to gradually grow again during the 2000s.

How to Build US-Iran Relations

| September 26, 2007

"...Iran has not suspended its uranium enrichment program, but it has not ignored the UN Security Council resolutions on Iran either, as can be discerned in the latest report by the International Atomic Energy Agency citing "significant progress" in Iran-IAEA cooperation. With the United States and Iran talking in Iraq and Iran-IAEA cooperation yielding concrete results in terms of Iran's nuclear transparency, the stage is potentially set for de-escalating the US-Iran tensions, particularly if both sides adopt a long-term view and sort out the security dimension."

Belfer Center Engages India as Emerging Great Power

Spring 2007

Whether one agrees or disagrees with the wisdom of the civilian nuclear power agreement signed in December by President George W. Bush, most agree that the deal will deepen the long-standing relationship between the U.S. and India, a relationship that will continue to impact both countries on many levels. Along with the Kennedy School and Harvard, the Belfer Center is working to expand the relationship that began in 1960 when President John F. Kennedy named Harvard's John Kenneth Galbraith as ambassador to India.

Iran Is Eager to Defuse the Nuclear Squabble

| May 10, 2006

"...the general public does not consider the nuclear issue to be of vital importance. Nuclear technology will do little for the average Iranian — it cannot create more jobs for a country that needs 1m jobs annually, it cannot change the chronic low efficiency, productivity and effectiveness of the economy and management, and it will do nothing to improve Iran's commercial ties with the rest of the world...."
