Preventing Another Cuban Missile Crisis

The Belfer Center’s Project on Managing the Atom, Intelligence Project, and Applied History Project organized a day-long conference in October to mark the 60th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis and to discuss what we’ve learned from the CMC. Managing the Atom’s Mariana Budjeryn discusses the relevance of those lessons for today’s conflict in Ukraine.

Nuclear Field Looks Inward at Diversity and Racism

Fall 2020

In the days and weeks following the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and others, the Belfer Center community joined in the public outcry against individual and systemic racism and began an intensive look inward at what must be done to dismantle the racism that continues in the United States. Affiliates of the Project on Managing the Atom are looking inward at the nuclear field as part of their effort to eliminate racism in the U.S.

Julius Weitzdörfer: Managing the Impact of Nuclear Disasters

Julius Weitzdörfer’s earliest childhood memories are the major global events of 1986—the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion and the Chernobyl disaster. Looking back, he realizes that these events must have contributed to shaping his later research interests in managing technological risks.

Iran's Secret Nuclear Documents

| Spring 2019

In mid-January, a team of scholars from the Belfer Center’s Intelligence and Managing the Atom Projects traveled to Tel Aviv, Israel to examine samples of, and receive briefings on, an archive of documents related to Iran’s nuclear weapons program that a clandestine Israeli intelligence operation spirited out of Iran in early 2018. The Belfer team’s forthcoming report will explore both the conclusions that can be drawn and the mysteries that remain.
