U.S. Engagement with Hungary: Reshaping NATO’s Collective Alliance

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 disrupted the European security landscape and forced political leaders to reconsider their strategic relationships. Galvanized by Russia’s aggression, NATO is at its strongest point in the 21st century; Hungary remains Russia’s closest ally within the Alliance, however, and is often a thorn in its side. If the U.S. can engage with Hungary, it ultimately enhances NATO's collective strength and cohesion - not solely for the support of Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, but for the enhancement of European security in the coming decades.

For the Common Defense Study Group: Key Themes from the Fall 2023 Seminar Series

The Belfer Center's National Security Fellows (NSFs), as part of the Defense, Emerging Technology, and Strategy (DETS) program, developed and taught the "For the Common Defense" study group throughout the Fall 2023 semester. Each “Common Defense” seminar is an in-depth exploration of a national security or defense-related subject taught by senior defense officials. Over the course of eight seminars, this study group examined key foreign policy topics, including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and great power competition.
