In the Fall/Winter 2016-17 issue of our Belfer Center newsletter, we feature six Belfer Center alumni who are currently serving in leadership positions in the government of the United States: Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter and his Chief of Staff Eric Rosenbach, Science and Technology Advisor to the President John P. Holdren, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power, Deputy Secretary of Energy Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall, and Ambassador and U.S. Representative to UN-Vienna and the IAEA Laura Holgate. These are just of a few of the many public servants in the U.S. and around the world whose careers have included time at the Belfer Center. We salute and thank them all.

The Summer 2016 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features recent and upcoming Center activities, along with research and analysis of critical global issues by members of the Center community. This issue features Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz’s address at Harvard Kennedy School on the significance of merging science and international affairs. Secretary Moniz used as an example the recent Iran nuclear agreement, in which he played a central role.

The Spring 2016 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features recent and upcoming Center activities, along with research and analysis of critical global issues by members of the Center community. This issue features the huge global impact of cheap oil, with comments by Leonardo Maugeri, Robert Stavins, Henry Lee, Meghan O’Sullivan, Calestous Juma, David Keith, and Khalid Alsweilem on its economic, environmental, and geo-political effects.

The Kennedy School was honored in December with a visit by Secretary of Defense Ashton B. Carter, former director of the Belfer Center and long-time HKS professor. Secretary Carter discussed a range of topics at a JFK Jr. Forum moderated by Center Director Graham Allison.

The Fall/Winter 2015-2016 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features recent and upcoming Center activities, along with research and analysis of critical global issues by members of the Center community. This issue highlights visits by Secretary of State John Kerry, who answered questions from an audience of more than 500 Harvard students and faculty in an event hosted by the Belfer Center, and by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who spoke to students and faculty as part of the American Secretaries of State Project, an initiative of Harvard Kennedy School, Harvard Law School, and Harvard Business School.

The Belfer Center hosts frequent seminars, workshops, and conferences, with national and international experts and government leaders presenting a diversity of views on issues ranging from the global economic crisis and energy/climate challenges to the Iranian nuclear dilemma and cyber terrorism. A lively exchange of ideas and insights with faculty, fellows, and students from the greater Harvard community results in thought-provoking and informative sessions. U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Senator John Kerry, former U.S. Senators Sam Nunn and Al Gore, and former Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara are among those featured in the photo essay of the Belfer Center’s Spring 2009 newsletter.

Belfer Center Hosts Al Gore 'Solutions Summit' to Design Carbon-free Future

Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center hosted former Vice President and Nobel Laureate Al Gore and 30 of the United States' top energy and climate experts for a "Solutions Summit" on the climate challenge on October 21-22, 2008. The "Solutions Summit" recipe is one developed by Vice President Gore following a series of Belfer Center brainstorming events in 2005 and 2006 organized by Belfer Center Director Graham Allison and Gore.
