Robert Stavins, Albert Pratt Professor of Business and Government at Harvard Kennedy School and a member of the Board of Directors at the school's Belfer Center, has been appointed to a new position in the Energy and Environmental Markets Advisory Committee at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Graham Allison, director of the Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, will receive the 2009 National Academy of Sciences' Award for Behavioral Research Relevant to the Prevention of Nuclear War on Sunday, April 26, 2009, in Washington, D.C. He is being honored for illuminating alternative ways of thinking about political decision making with special relevance to crises, including nuclear crises, as demonstrated in his groundbreaking Essence of Decision: Explaining the Cuban Missile Crisis and subsequent works.

PDP Co-Director Ashton B. Carter was confirmed by voice vote by the Senate as Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics on April 23, 2009.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Venkatesh “Venky” Narayanamurti will be the new director of the Science, Technology, and Public Policy Program at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Belfer Center Director Graham Allison announced today.

Harvard Kennedy School's Belfer Center Fellow Arnold Bogis provided policy analysis during the development of "Zero Hour: America’s Medic," a video game-based learning tool recently released by George Washington University’s National Emergency Medical Services Preparedness Initiative (NEMSPI). “Zero Hour” is designed to train and exercise Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and other first responder communities through a series of virtual simulations based on planning scenarios developed by the Department of Homeland Security.

President Barack Obama has nominated PDP Co-Director Ashton B. Carter to serve as Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics (AT&L).  On March 26, Dr. Carter testified before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

With the leadership of the Bipartisan Commission on U.S. Policy towards Russia, established by the Belfer Center at Harvard Kennedy School and the Nixon Center in Washington, Belfer Center Director Graham Allison met last week in Moscow with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

Juliette Kayyem, undersecretary of homeland security for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and a former executive director and current member (on leave) of the board of directors of Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, has been named Assistant Secretary of Intergovernmental Programs of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). She previously served as executive director for research at the Belfer Center and taught courses in public policy at Harvard Kennedy School.
