Diplomacy and International Politics

Former UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon (MPP ‘85) and former Acting Assistant Secretary for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Susan Thornton, will discuss the negotiations for peace and security on the Korean Peninsula. This forum event will be moderated by Ambassador Nicholas Burns, Roy and Barbara Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations and Faculty Chair of the Future of Diplomacy Project.

Ambassador Nicholas Burns, professor at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, said that President Donald Trump is right to dispute China on trade, but his arguments won't be effective if the U.S. is having trade disputes with Canada, Mexico and Europe.

Texas Congressman Joaquin Castro joined Harvard Kennedy School Professor Nicholas Burns in a discussion concerning the role Congress should play in foreign policy in the era of President Trump. Castro discussed his upbringing and the civic conscious he gained at a young age alongside his twin brother Julian Castro, which encouraged him to eventually pursue a career in public service. The conversation covered a wide range of foreign affairs topics including immigration, trade, and terrorism. Castro took questions from the audience and voiced his concerns about a variety of global developments and threats and his believe that Congress should take a more active role in these issues.  

Cathryn Cluver Ashbrook, Founding Executive Director of the Future of Diplomacy Project discusses the likelihood of international trade wars, possible steel tariffs on imports into the United States, the role of G-20 observer states, including Singapore and the health of transatlantic relations.

Nicholas Burns discusses the G20 meeting in Germany and what we should be looking for.
