Pardee School at Boston University. They will discuss Pakistan's increasing role in multilateral relations and U.S.-Pakistan relations.

Pakistan has the second-largest gender gap in the world, according to the  World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report in 2016, and ranks 153 out of 163 countries in Global Peace Index for the same year. In a South Asia Week panel moderated by Cathryn Cluver, speakers will discuss the relationship between women’s empowerment, peacebuilding and development in defining an inclusive security agenda for Pakistan.

The Global Refugee Crisis

In 2015, the number of globally displaced persons hit a record high of 65.3 million, the largest number in history. Fleeing from conflict and famine, many individuals find themselves displaced for a decade or more, caught between instability at home and insufficient intake capacity in destination countries. David Miliband, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, will speak about the challenges of protecting and providing for these populations, and the implication of the global refugee crisis for human rights, international security and global health. The discussion will be moderated by Nicholas Burns, Faculty Director of the Future of Diplomacy Project and Goodman Family Professor of the Practice of Diplomacy and International Relations.

Pascal Brice, Director-General of the French Agency for Refugees and Displaced Persons will offer a practitioner's perspective, providing insight into the numerous challenges involved in providing aid and protection to such individuals in the face of political, geographical and societal divisions.

As the British government prepares to begin the arduous process of extricating itself from the European Union when Article 50 of the Treaty of Lisbon is triggered in late March, Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon has called for a second referendum on Scottish independence, following a failed vote in 2014. 

Douglas Alexander will offer an inside perspective on what "Brexit means Brexit" does in fact mean for Scotland, the UK, and the world.
