During the November 16-19, 2008 International Conference for Rebuilding Sustainable Communities after Disasters at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, Justin Dargin moderated the energy panel and lectured on "Rebuilding and Securing Critical Energy Assets in Times of Disaster: Strategies for a Resilient System." In his lecture, Dargin discussed the basic elements and vulnerabilities of the US energy grid. Dargin proposed that "smart" technology, such as metering and energy efficiency measures, will help increase energy resilence. He also advocated the use of decentralized energy assets (DEA). These DEAs, he argued, should be used in parallel with the national grid to ensure minimal disruption. Dargin proposed that DEAs should be used in the operation of critical facilities to prevent a disaster from spiralling out of control.
