Summer 2014 Belfer Center Newsletter

| Summer 2014

The Summer 2014 issue of the Belfer Center newsletter features recent and upcoming activities, research, and analysis by members of the Center community on critical global issues. This edition highlights the Belfer Center’s longtime efforts to improve nuclear security and the Center's critical role in the 2014 Nuclear Security Summit to prevent nuclear terrorism. This issue also features a timeline and analysis of significant events in Ukraine during the past 20 years. We also note a bright spot in U.S.-Russian relations – a statement by the Elbe Group of retired Russian and U.S. generals cautioning the two governments not to let Ukraine and Crimea interrupt the joint efforts of the two countries to protect “our shared strategic interests.”

Also in this newsletter, we describe the first Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education program on cybersecurity, an extension of the Center’s Project on Technology, Security, and Conflict in the Cyber Age.  We spotlight the recent China Public Policy Forum co-hosted by the Ash and Belfer Centers to look at the current and future state of U.S.-China relations. And we focus on the collegial relationship between Harvard and MIT with articles about former MIT President Susan Hockfield’s address at Harvard Kennedy School on revolutionizing technology by blending biology and engineering and HKS Professor Calestous Juma’s appointment as Martin Luther King Visiting Professor at MIT and as faculty chair of the HKS Mason Program.

Graham Allison pens a tribute to James Schlesinger, longtime chairman of the Center’s International Council, who passed away in March. In a Q&A, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, now a senior fellow, answers our questions about his leadership experiences and advice for future leaders. And, we highlight Tommy Koh, the recipient of this year’s Great Negotiator Award and our new Communications and Outreach Director Josh Burek. We also feature two of our research fellows, Jill Goldenziel and Ariane Tabatabai.
