Arctic Transformation and Resilience Study Group

The Arctic Transformation and Resilience Study Group, led by Arctic Initiative Senior Fellow Joel Clement, will give students the opportunity to learn about and work on issues of Arctic resilience. Working together to deliver a compilation and brief analysis of existing policies that support or inhibit resilience in the Arctic, students will have the opportunity to meet with top Arctic scientists, policymakers, indigenous knowledge-holders, and finance experts, while developing a report that will be delivered to the Secretariat of the Arctic Council Sustainable Development Working Group.

This study group will be held on Tuesdays, from 6pm–7:30pm, beginning Oct 29, and including Nov 5, 12, 19, and 26. For more information or to sign-up, please contact brittany_janis@hks.harvard.edu. Space is limited; please register by October 21.

"Transatlantic Security in the Age of Insecurity – The Road to Warsaw 2016" marked the first seminar of the Project's annual Europe Week. Speakers, Douglas Alexander, former UK Shadow Foreign Secretary and Senior Fellow with the Future of Diplomacy Project; and Kori Schake, former U.S. Deputy Director of Policy Planning and Research Fellow at the Hoover Institution, led a panel discussion, moderated by the Project's Executive Director, Cathryn Clüver, on February 22, 2016.

The Future of Diplomacy Project held its annual Europe Week during February inviting influential practitioners and experts on European affairs. Their public discussions offered Harvard Kennedy School students and faculty a unique opportunity to grapple with the intractactable geopolitical issues at play in Europe concerning NATO, the EU migration crisis, German leadership, and the rise of European populism.

Amanda J. Rothschild, International Security Program Research Fellow, is Co-winner of the 2016 Patricia Weitsman Award

Amanda J. Rothschild's paper, "Tipping Theory: Origins of Great Britain's Suppression of the Slave Trade and Implications for Today's Collective Action Problems," is one of two co-winners of the 2016 Patricia Weitsman Award for Outstanding International Security Studies Section Graduate Paper. The paper skillfully employs new archival and documentary evidence to offer a novel relative gains-focused explanation for why Britain worked to abolish the international slave trade during the 19th century.
