Setting a Course for Arctic Research: Arctic Initiative at Arctic Science Summit Week 2024

The Arctic Initiative team helped kick off discussions for the International Conference on Arctic Research Planning Process 2022-2026 (ICARP IV) research priority teams at the Arctic Science Summit Week (ASSW) 2024 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

President Biden Nominates Kurt Campbell for Deputy Secretary of State 

The White House announced today that President Joe Biden has nominated Kurt Campbell for Deputy Secretary of State. Campbell, recent Belfer Center Senior Fellow and former Assistant Director of the Center, is currently the National Security Council Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific. He is the architect of Biden’s China and Indo-Pacific strategy and advises the president on a range of policy issues related to Asia.

MEDIA ALERT - Belfer Center Experts Available to Discuss 2023 G20 New Delhi Summit

The upcoming 2023 G20 summit scheduled in New Delhi will convene leaders representing the world's major economies will convene to deliberate and strategize about imminent environmental and economic challenges. The overarching theme of "One Earth" will serve as a clarion call for unity and collective responsibility, underscoring the urgency of collaborative endeavors. Participating nations will engage in open dialogues, deliberating the adoption of cleaner energy sources, advancing circular economic models, and fortifying support mechanisms for marginalized communities grappling with environmental transformations.

A number Belfer Center experts are available to discuss the G20, its policy discussions, and any commitments announced.

Salata Institute Launches Initiative to Reduce Global Methane Emissions

The Salata Institute for Climate and Sustainability at Harvard University launched today a major research and outreach initiative to reduce global methane emissions. The initiative seeks meaningful and sustained progress in global methane-emissions reductions through research and effective engagement with government policymakers and with key stakeholders in business, nongovernmental organizations, and international institutions.

Mark Pascale Named Director of Intelligence Project at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center

Cambridge, MA – Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is pleased to announce that Mark Pascale will be the new Director of the Center’s Intelligence Project. As Director, Pascale will succeed former Director Paul Kolbe as the senior mentor of the Recanati-Kaplan Fellows and lead the work of the Center to advance policy-relevant knowledge in intelligence areas and help prepare future leaders. He will begin the position in July.

The War in Ukraine at One Year: Belfer Center Perspectives

Marking one year since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the Belfer Center this week hosted Ukraine’s Foreign Minister for a discussion of the war and its significance for Ukraine and the world. In this special feature, we include video from Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba’s conversation with the Center’s Eric Rosenbach and Paula Dobriansky. We also include a report card on the war from Graham Allison and Kate Davidson, a policy brief from the Sexual Violence in Conflict project, interviews that highlight perspectives from the people of Ukraine and Russia, and new insights and perspectives from a range of experts on how the war is impacting global order as well as regions and people around the globe.

HPCA Co-Hosts Important COP-27 Side Event on Measuring Methane Emissions to Advance Global Climate Policy

Significant technological advances in satellite technology and atmospheric measurements have greatly enhanced the understanding of methane concentrations and emissions. The dynamic ways in which those advancements are allowing researchers to monitor methane emissions down to the source level was the focus of discussion Thursday (November 17) at a COP-27 side event co-hosted by the Harvard Project on Climate Agreements, the Enel Foundation, and the government of Mexico.

Harvard Kennedy School Belfer Center’s Eric Rosenbach Named to Secretary of State’s International Security Advisory Board

The U.S. Department of State announced Tuesday, October 18 that Eric Rosenbach, Belfer Center Co-Director and former Pentagon Chief of Staff and Assistant Secretary of Defense for Homeland Defense and Global Security, has been named to the Secretary of State’s International Security Advisory Board (ISAB).

International Security Editor Jacqueline Hazelton's "Bullets Not Ballots" Wins APSA Foreign Policy Section's Best Book Award

Bullets Not Ballots: Success in Counterinsurgency Warfare, which was published as part of the Cornell Studies in Security Affairs in May 2021, has been named the American Political Science Association (APSA) Foreign Policy Section's Best Book for 2021–2022.  The award will be presented in September 2022 at the APSA Annual Meeting in Montreal, Quebec.
