Meghan O’Sullivan, the Jeane Kirkpatrick Professor of the Practice of International Affairs and Director of the Center’s Geopolitics of Energy project, will become Belfer Center Director on July 1, 2023. As she prepares for this transition, Communications Associate Director Sharon Wilke asked her to share her thoughts on the Belfer Center and what she sees as its greatest strengths, why she decided to take on the leadership role, and how she hopes to build on the Center’s strengths and impact in the near and distant future.

From the Director

| Spring 2020

The Belfer Center’s commitment to the Middle East transcends study of a contentious part of the world, writes Belfer Center Director Ash Carter. Our higher purpose, he says, is fostering real engagement with diverse populations. In a region where human connection—both between and within borders—remains wanting, the Center understands that there’s no substitute for direct conversation with those who make the Middle East their home.

The Oil Crash: Why I Was Right

| October 21, 2014

In my 2012 study “Oil, the Next Revolution”, I stressed something that no one was seeing at that time (and much later as well). As summed up by the opening sentence of the study:

“Contrary to what most people believe, oil supply capacity is growing worldwide at such an unprecedented level that it might outpace consumption. This could lead to a glut of overproduction and a steep dip in oil prices.”

On Tap at Belfer Center: Oil and Water

Winter 2012-2013

Leonardo Maugeri writes that oil production capacity is surging in the United States and several other countries at such a fast pace that global oil output capacity is likely to grow by nearly 20 percent by 2020—possibly prompting a plunge or even a collapse in oil prices.

Case Competition Encourages Student Involvement, Real-World Problem Solving

| Summer 2012

The Belfer Center’s Geopolitics of Energy Project challenged students across the Harvard and MIT communities to develop a strategy to solve the case, “New Finds of Energy in the Eastern Mediterranean: Cause for Conflict or Cooperation?” as part of the project’s second annual energy policy case competition held at the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) on April 19.
