Sandri Gozi, Italian Undersecretary of State for European Affairs, joined the Future of Diplomacy Project on November 1 for a discussion titled “Italy, the EU and the US: A Conversation on Transatlantic Challenges.”

Dr. Ian Bremmer, expert in political risk and founder of the Eurasia Group, gave a seminar sponsored by the the Future of Diplomacy Project on Thursday, November 9 at the Harvard Kennedy School, titled “Managing Risk in an Unstable World."

The Right Honourable Douglas Alexander offered his views on European security in a discussion moderated by FDP Executive Director Cathryn Cluver.

"As 2015 comes to a close, the annual numbers of migrants smuggled to Greece and Italy and asylum claims lodged in Germany have passed a million, as well as the number of additional displacements produced this year by the conflict in Syria. Moreover, Europe’s Mediterranean shore has now the unchallenged title of the world’s most lethal border. Not only this. The migrant crisis is also putting to the test some of Europe’s most fundamental values, from the freedom of circulation within its territories, to international protection beyond..."

In this installment of “Inside the Middle East: Q&A,” recorded on April 1, 2015, Dr. Philippe Fargues, Director of the Migration Policy Centre, Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies European University Institute (EUI), discusses the humanitarian crisis of migrants from North Africa, the Levant, and the Sahel, crossing the Mediterranean Sea to Europe on boats.

UN Deputy Secretary-General, Jan Eliasson, delivered an address entitled “A World in Turmoil – A Test for the UN and its Member States” and led a discussion with experts, students, fellows, and members of the public on September 10 as part of the Future of Diplomacy Project’s first public event for the 2014-2015 academic year. He explored the great turmoil confronted by the world and expressed optimism about the UN’s advancement of its three pillars – Peace and Security, Development, and Human Rights – as well as positive global trends existing today.

The tragic murders of U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other American diplomats in Libya, and candidate Mitt Romney's subsequent missteps have reminded us of two things: the ever-present dangers for Americans in the Middle East and the true nature and limitations of our leaders.
