New Fellows Pandith and Ramesh Enrich Dialogue on Critical Issues from Extremism to Climate Change

Farah Pandith, America’s first special representative to Muslim communities, joined the Belfer Center this fall as a Fisher Family Fellow with the Future of Diplomacy Project and as a senior fellow with the Middle East Initiative. Jairam Ramesh, a member of Parliament from Andhra Pradesh, India, and a leader in international climate negotiations, joined the Belfer Center this fall as a 2014 Fisher Family Fellow with the Future of Diplomacy Project.

Aisha Ahmad: Knowledge Without Action Is Injustice

As a child, Aisha Ahmad remembers vividly the arms bazaars in Peshawar and the throngs of bearded mujahedeen commanders as they passed through her grandfather’s smoke laden offices in the Pakistani frontier province.Though she was born in the UK and grew up in Canada, her family retained strong ties with their native community and during her youth Ahmad regularly traveled to the unruly Pakistan-Afghanistan border region.

Since the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) emerged 50 years ago to counter the dominant power blocs of the Northern Hemisphere, a new global order has taken shape. In her June 2011 discussion paper, “Diplomacy and Nuclear Non-Proliferation: Navigating the Non-Aligned Movement,” Belfer Center fellow Yvonne Yew argues that developing countries now stand at a pivotal moment for nuclear engagement.

Conference Probes Revolution, Reform in the Middle East

Q&A with Gary Samore and Laura Holgate

In this Q&A, we asked Belfer Center alumni Gary Samore and Laura Holgate to comment on the planning and successes of the Nuclear Security Summit, which they were responsible for organizing. The Summit that brought 46 global leaders to Washington, D.C. in April was a major step by President Obama to "ensure that terrorists never acquire a nuclear weapon." Samore, coordinator for arms control and weapons of mass destruction, proliferation, and terrorism, and Holgate, senior director for weapons of mass destruction terrorism and threat reduction, are alumni of the Belfer Center's International Security Program.
