As the 75th anniversary summit of NATO in Washington approaches, the question of inviting Ukraine to join the Alliance has sparked considerable debate. While some argue that Ukraine’s accession would strengthen NATO, others fear greater escalation with Russia. This pivotal decision requires careful consideration of the implications for NATO, Ukraine, and the broader international community.

This study group, led by Dr. Karen Donfried, is examining key foreign policy debates flowing from Russia’s war against Ukraine. Two teams of four students each debated this week's topic as the rest of the study group observed.

Iran's New Best Friends

Mohammad Tabaar argues that the attacks on Red Sea ships unintentionally advance the Houthis agenda by allowing it to claim that it is fighting imperialism, and the attacks help Iran by fortifying its political foothold in the Middle East. Washington should therefore cease the strikes. It should, instead, work to halt the war in Gaza. The United States should also try to strengthen the region's diplomatic agreements and shore up its security framework. Otherwise, the Houthi-Iranian partnership will only grow stronger, as will Tehran's leverage in the region.
