The Geopolitics of Climate Change: Scenarios and Pathways for Arctic 2050

In May 2023, the Arctic Initiative held a closed-door workshop for climate scientists, regional experts, Indigenous and youth leaders, and national security officials from six Arctic states, with the goal of identifying the most plausible scenarios and pathways for how geopolitics linked to climate change in the Arctic might evolve and actionable steps that the U.S. government might consider taking today to manage emerging risks. Eyck Fremann summarizes his key takeaways from the event.

To mark Earth Day 2021, a number of Belfer Center climate, security, and intelligence experts took part in two conferences that identified and discussed the impacts of climate change not only on the environment and well-being of the world’s people, but also on international security and political stability throughout the world.

Apply to Be an Arctic Innovator Delegate

The Belfer Center's Arctic Initiative is selecting a small group of 2–3 Harvard students to present their ideas at the Arctic Innovation Lab in Iceland. The Lab takes place at the world's largest Arctic gathering, the Arctic Circle Assembly, from October 10–13, 2019.  The application deadline is Friday, September 6, 2019.

Gabrielle Scrimshaw, a 2018 MPA candidate at the Harvard Kennedy School, whose pitch for an indigenous investment fund was voted the best idea to improve the Arctic by the audience and a panel of judges at an Arctic Innovators event Nov. 15.

Students Offer Innovative Ideas for Tackling Climate Change Impacts on Arctic
