About

The BelferCenter for Science and International Affairs welcomes you to a Director's Seminar on “At The Abyss: An Insider’s History of the Cold War” with Thomas C. Reed, Former Secretary of the Air Force.  He has served as Director of National Reconnaissance, a special assistant to President Regan for national security policy, and a consultant to the Director of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, where much of the country’s nuclear weapon research takes place. He is also one of the few living Americans to have witnessed the detonation of a thermonuclear device.

Thomas Reed will be speaking about his first book, “At the Abyss: An Insider’s History of the Cold War.” The book delves into thirty tales about the men and women of both sides – presidents and general secretaries, soldiers and scientists, schemers and spooks – who fought and ended the Cold War without a nuclear shot being fired. The book provides a comprehensive, gripping history of the near-deadly power plays, political paranoia and unchecked nuclear games-manship that defined the second half of the 20th century.
