About

Michael Buonocore, MPP '11 and former Marine Corps infantry officer, will lead a discussion on his experiences in southern Afghanistan's volatile Helmand Province.  The conversation will center around the psychological experience of warfare and what it is like to live and operate in an austere environment.

Michael Buonocore spent the last four years as an infantry officer in the Marine Corps and returned from a 7-month tour in Helmand Province in June of 2009.  During that deployment, he spent time in both the Musa Qala and Now Zad districts.  In Musa Qala, Buonocore commanded an independent 85 Marine detachment that conducted combat and other types of operations.  After his unit was relocated, Buonocore served as second in command of approximately 300 Marines in Now Zad.  He is currently a Master of Public Policy Candidate (2011), and his opinions have appeared in the The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Huffington Post and the Boston Herald.
