The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is proud to host a Fellow/Student Q&A Session with the Vice President for Global Security and Sustainability at the MacArthur Foundation, Gary Samore.

As of September 2005, Gary Samore is the Vice President for Global Security and Sustainability at the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.  As Vice President, Samore is responsible for the Foundation’s international grantmaking, currently totalling approximately $75 million annually.  The international program provides grants in the fields of international peace and security, human rights, international justice, the environment, and population.  With headquarters in Chicago, the Foundation has offices in Mexico, India, Nigeria, and Russia, and supports work in 85 countries. 

From 1996 to 2000, Samore served as Special Assistant to President Clinton and Senior Director for Non-Proliferation and Export Controls at the National Security Council (NSC). From 1987 to 1995, he held various positions at the Department of State, including Deputy to the Ambassador-at-large for Korean Affairs, Robert Gallucci, where he was one of the U.S. negotiators of the 1994 U.S.–DPRK Agreed Framework.

After leaving the U.S. Government, Samore served as Director of Studies and Senior Fellow for Non-Proliferation at the International Institute of Strategic Studies (IISS) in London where he was responsible for overall direction of the Institute’s research programme. He also directed the Institute's Non-Proliferation Programme. He is the editor of the IISS ‘Strategic Dossier’ on Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction: A Net Assessment (published in September 2002); North Korea’s Weapons Programmes: A Net Assessment (published in January 2004); and Iran’s Strategic Weapons Programmes (published in September 2005).
