The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host an off-the-record seminar with Keith Dayton on Wednesday, June 4th in the Belfer Center Library (L369).
Lieutenant General Keith Dayton, was appointed the U.S. security coordinator for the Palestinians in November 2005, charged with helping the Fatah government reform the Palestinian security apparatus to establish internal law and order, stop terrorism and deter extralegal forces.
Commissioned in June 1970 as a Second Lieutenant of Artillery, Lieutenant Dayton served as a Nuclear Support Team Leader in Korea. Following the Infantry Officer Advanced Course, then Captain Dayton commanded twice at the Battery level in Fort Lewis, Washington. Following training in Russian language, Major Dayton served in a number of assignments as a Foreign Area Officer specializing in the former Soviet Union. After commanding at the Battalion and Brigade levels, Colonel Dayton served as a Senior Army Fellow on the Council on Foreign Relations in New York. As a General Officer, General Dayton has served as the United States Defense Attaché in Moscow; Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs (Western Hemisphere/Europe/ Africa) on The Joint Staff; Deputy Director for Human Intelligence in the Defense Intelligence Agency; Director, Iraqi Survey Group during Operation Iraqi Freedom; and Director of Strategy, Plans and Policy, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Department of the Army.
Lieutenant General Dayton's awards and decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal; the Parachutist Badge; and the Ranger Tab.
He holds a Bachelor of Arts in History from the College of William and Mary, a Master of Arts in History from Cambridge University and a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of Southern California.
