The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will host a students and fellows seminar with Ambassador Cameron Munter, U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan, in the Belfer Center Library (L369).

Ambassador Munter was sworn in as U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan on October 6, 2010.  He served during probably the most contentious period of U.S.-Pakistani relations in memory.  Munter navigated treacherous diplomatic terrain, including the Abbottabad raid that killed Osama bin Laden, punitive drone attacks, and a stand-off over NATO supply route following the November 26th, 2011 attack in which American forces killed 26 Pakistani soldiers. The incidents crippled U.S.-Pakistan ties already under strain over attacks originating from Pakistan on the interests of U.S. and its allies in Afghanistan and elsewhere.

Munter has ample experience in difficult assignments.  His prior tour of duty was in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, where he served as Political-Military Minister-Counselor in 2009 and later Deputy Chief of Mission.  From 2007 to 2009 Munter served as Ambassador in Belgrade, during which time the Embassy was attacked and partially set ablaze.  In 2006, Munter led the Provincial Reconstruction Team in conflict-ridden Mosul, Iraq.

He was Deputy Chief of Mission in Prague from 2005 to 2007 and in Warsaw from 2002 to 2005, where he managed the American contribution to those countries’ integration into Western civilian and military institutions.  Before these assignments, in Washington, he was Director for Central Europe at the National Security Council (1999-01), Executive Assistant to the Counselor of the Department of State (1998-99), Director of the Northern European Initiative (1998), and Chief of Staff in the NATO Enlargement Ratification Office (1997-98). His other domestic assignments include: Country Director for Czechoslovakia at the Department of State (1989-91), and Dean Rusk Fellow at Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy (1991).

Ambassador Munter received a doctoral degree in modern European history in 1983 from the Johns Hopkins University. He taught European history at the University of California and directed European studies at the Twentieth Century Fund before joining the Foreign Service.
