Dr. Gary Samore is the Executive Director for Research at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. From 2009 to 2013, he served as President Obama’s White House Coordinator for Arms Control and Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD), including as U.S. Sherpa for the 2010 Nuclear Security Summit in Washington, DC and the 2012 Nuclear Security Summit in Seoul, Korea. He also served as President Clinton’s Senior Director for Nonproliferation and Export Controls on the National Security Council from 1996 to 2001. Prior to that, Dr. Samore led the U.S. delegation of experts that negotiated the 1994 U.S.-DPRK Agreed Framework, for which he received the Secretary of Defense Medal for Meritorious Civilian Service in October 1995.
Dr. Samore was a National Science Foundation Fellow at Harvard University, where he received his MA and PhD in government in 1984. While at Harvard, he was a pre-doctoral fellow at what was then the Harvard Center for Science and International Affairs, later to become the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.
Dr. John Park is an Asia security analyst at the Harvard Kennedy School, where he serves as Director of the Korea Working Group and an Adjunct Lecturer in Public Policy. He is also a Lecturer in the Government Department at Harvard College. He was the 2012–2013 Stanton Nuclear Security Junior Faculty Fellow at MIT’s Security Studies Program. He previously directed Northeast Asia Track 1.5 projects at the U.S. Institute of Peace in Washington, DC. Prior to that he worked at Goldman Sachs and The Boston Consulting Group.
Dr. Park regularly provides commentary on CNN, CNBC, BBC, and Bloomberg. His writings have appeared in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Financial Times. His recent publication is a co-authored study with Dr. Jim Walsh titled “Stopping North Korea, Inc.: Sanctions Effectiveness and Unintended Consequences.” He recently testified on North Korea sanctions before the Senate Banking Committee, as well as the House Financial Services Committee. Dr. Park received his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He completed his pre-doctoral and post-doctoral training at Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center.
