The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs is proud to host a Student and Fellows Session with Faryar Shirzad, Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy National Security Advisor for International Economic Affairs.
Mr. Shirzad’s responsibilities include oversight of international finance, trade, energy, environment, development, and stabilization and reconstruction issues. He is also President Bush’s representative to the G-8 (the “G-8 Sherpa”) and is responsible for managing the President’s participation in international economic summits.
Prior to joining the NSC staff, Mr. Shirzad served as Assistant Secretary for Import Administration at the Department of Commerce from 2001 to 2003. From 1997-2001, Mr. Shirzad served as the International Trade Counsel on the Majority Staff of the Senate Finance Committee.
Prior to his U.S. Government service, Mr. Shirzad was an attorney in private practice. He earned his law degree from the University of Virginia, a Mater’s in Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a B.S. in Finance from the University of Maryland.
