The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs will to host a Directors' Lunch with Juliette Kayyem, Undersecretary of Homeland Security, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and former Executive Director of Research at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs on Monday, September 17th, in the Belfer Center Library (L369)
Juliette Kayyem, appointed by Governor Deval L. Patrick in January 2007, is the Commonwealth's first Undersecretary of Homeland Security. Previous to that, she was a lecturer in public policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government, where she taught classes on national security, homeland security and war powers. During her time at the Kennedy School, Ms. Kayyem oversaw the Homeland Security program from 2001-2003, served as the Executive Director of Research at the Belfer Center and as the co-faculty chair of the Dubai Initiative, a program with the Dubai School of Government.
Ms. Kayyem has extensive experience in homeland and national security. A former legal advisor to Attorney General Janet Reno, she also served as a congressional appointee to the National Commission on Terrorism. She is the co-author, with Philip B. Heymann, of the critically acclaimed Protecting Liberty in the Age of Terror and served as terrorism analyst for NBC News.
