Beyond a Militarized Approach to Terrorism: Experience from Sri Lanka

About

Ranil Wickremesinghe, Sri Lanka's Prime Minister from 1993-1994 and 2001-2004, is a Visiting Scholar at MIT's Center for International Studies. Mr. Wickremasinghe, who was narrowly defeated in Sri Lanka's November 2005 presidential election and who heads that country's United National Party, in 2002 negotiated a ceasefire between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels, in which the rebels dropped their demand for independence in favor of regional autonomy. The decades-old civil war resumed in 2003. Mr. Wickremesinghe is currently working to help revive the peace process. The presentation will be followed by Q&A. Moderated by Balakrishnan Rajagopal, Director of the Program on Human Rights and Justice.
